On Friday, October 12 the the Go Build Georgia team toured Plant Vogtle, Southern Company’s nuclear development project located in Waynesboro, Georgia.
Our team learned about the history of Units 1 & 2, as well as the construction progress of units 3 & 4 which are scheduled to be complete by 2017.
Did you know that Plant Vogtle provides electricity every day for more than 500,000 homes and emits less carbon than a hybrid automobile?
Also Plant Vogtle is home to one of the world’s largest cranes! The crane known as “Heavy Lift Derrick” can rotate 360 degrees to serve both units 3 & 4. Derrick’s boom stretches 560 feet into the sky.
Being in the field of workforce development, we were interested in the career opportunities on Plant Vogtle. According to Southern Company, the employment for Units 1 & 2 is roughly 900 people. During construction of units 3 & 4 more than 3,500 jobs are needed with a predicted 800 permanent jobs to be available!
Plant Vogtle offers a variety of jobs some of which are:
- Project management
- Pipe fitters
